Talent Management 2012 Summary

February 2012

iVentiv's 3rd Talent Management, Executive Knowledge Exchange took place in Brussels on the 6th-7th February 2012.  Around the iVentiv 'hollow-square' we had Group Talent Management Directors from Carrefour, Panasonic, Volvo Cars, Media Saturn, Bekaert, TNT Bertelsmann and TJX amongst others.  A group which was perfectly aligned to discuss global challenges and opportunities in Talent Management.

Event Chairman Geoff Glover (VP HR at Volvo Cars) opened the session with a collaborative, roundtable look at Talent Management in 2012 and an assessment of key priorities around the table.  Geoff was followed by Elie Matta of HEC Paris (an annual sponsor of iVentiv) who took us through an excellent session on "Battling Myopia & Maintaining Resilience".

Following a lively lunch discussion the Global Talent Director from Panasonic took us through a discussion on the BRIC countries and challenges and opportunities they offer.  We closed the day with a collaborative café discussion where the group split to discuss "the balance between global and local approaches to TM" and "HR readiness to serve the new agenda".

After a lively evening of networking day two started with a roundtable theme development discussion along with feedback on the previous day's collaborative sessions.  The Talent Development Director from TJX then took us through an extremely engaging session on Executive Induction.  To close the day off the Head of HR Expansion & International Coordination at Media Saturn took a look at HR and the future which was an excellent discussion to close this year's session.

Leading in Learning 2011 Summary

December 2011

iVentiv's Leading in Learning, Executive Knowledge Exchange took place in San Francisco on the 5th-6th December 2011.  With a fantastic group of Learning Leaders from companies such as Nike, Qualcomm, NetApp, IBM, Hitachi, Best Buy, Gap and Toyota this session was perfectly placed to look at the future role of Learning Leader.

The session opened with a collaborative discussion on the key challenges and opportunities laying ahead for the CLO.  We quickly outlined the key synergies in the room and identified some topics for further attention during the collaborative cafe later in the day.  The CLO at Nike then took us through an exceptional 'learning brand' case study.  Further collaborative discussions followed with a look at the Millennial leader and global L&D practices.

Day one closed off with the SVP Innovation & Leadership at Best Buy hosting a lively discussion around the topic of innovation, our interpretations of this field and ways in which innovation can be cultivated.

After a lively networking evening we started day two with a look at the evolution of technology in learning with CERTPOINT's long-standing Chairman, Constantin Ohanian.  Following this the VP of NetApp's corporate university demonstrated an excellent learning tool which effectively bridged the gap between L&D and performance support.  Some discussions on the 70/20/10 model were followed by Unlearning Guru Jay Cross of the Internet Time Alliance.  Jay took us on and interesting journey through changes in the world, 'Unmanagement' and 'unbooks' before event Chairman Charles Jennings wrapped things up.

It was great to bring iVentiv's unique model to the West Coast and we really look forward to being back next year for another excellent exchange.

Corporate University 2011 Summary

October 2011

iVentiv's 2nd Corporate University, Executive Knowledge Exchange achieves an exceptional 92% overall event score.  The session was chaired by Frédéric Olivier, Head of Dexia's Corporate University and member of the iVentiv Advisory Board.

Please watch Russell's summary of this years session:

Frédéric opened the session by asking all participants to outline one key strength of their corporate university one key challenge.  Some of the key strengths were outlined as speed of responsiveness, transparency, driving organisational change, strategic alignment, cross-divisional networking, driving a common organisational language and building a bridge between the global mind-set and local needs.  On the other side some of the CUs were facing challenges such as the successful transfer of knowledge (particularly to China), developing a global mind-set whilst addressing local needs, appropriate branding/communications of learning initiatives and the challenge of running learning like a business.

The topic of running learning like a business was picked up by Philips where the tradition of L&D professionals to refer to themselves as being ‘outside of the business’ was questioned.  It was argued that to drive value and become integral to the business the CU must shake this traditional divide and become ‘part of the business’.

Further discussion groups were facilitated by Danone, Zurich Financial Services, Canon and EADS who looked at various topics including Glocal networking, L&D transformation, rationalisation of the supplier list and best practices in globalising learning initiatives.  The issue of restrained budgets was also voiced and learning technologies were proposed as a good reaction where more can be done with less.  However, this then posed a new challenge as L&D teams need to be up skilled to keep pace with changes in new technologies.

We also had an excellent collaborative cafe session which addressed the following topics:

Group 1: What’s next? How to bring the CU to the next level? (web 2.0,…)

Group 2: Glocal reality… How to design/deliver global learning in different parts of the world?

Group 3: How do I run my CU like a business (benchmarking session)?

This session has left us with plenty of areas to build upon at future sessions.  With our next European session focussing on Executive Development and our next USA session looking at Leading in Learning we shall have plenty of opportunities to move these discussions forward.

If you are a VP/Director and would like to join the conversation please do!

Learning & Development 2011 Summary

June 2011

iVentiv’s 3rd Learning & Development, Executive Knowledge Exchange took place 7th-8th June in central London.  This was an exciting occasion for us as we celebrated our fourth birthday (since establishment) and our third birthday of events.  With our renewed format this session was extremely well received in the UK capital.

Proceedings were opened by iVentiv Advisory Board Chairman Charles Jennings with a summary of the discussions which Charles had chaired for us a month earlier in New York City.  We then moved into a discussion of the future role for the CLO with HSBC’s Global Head of Learning, Talent, Resourcing & OD, ably assisted in this open exchange by Nick Holley and Chris Roebuck.

Philips International then took a look at the importance of connecting learning with the business and the power of technology enabled learning.  Following a discussion-based lunch session the Global Learning Strategy Director at GlaxoSmithKline lead us through an extremely interactive workshop on the 70/20/10 model.

Former Morgan Stanley Director, Todd Brown then demonstrated the power of David Allen’s GTD – ‘Getting Things Done’ work-life management system before we closed the day with an iVentiv Collaborative Café.

Day two opened with some great feedback from the collaborative café facilitators.  Next, Marc de Rond from the University of Cambridge: Judge Business School led an exceptional, ethnographical take on high performance teams.  We then had an insight to the power of multi-platform learning from iVentiv annual partner LINE Communications.

The afternoon saw an excellent look at the NHS eMentoring programme with a live video coaching call which really engaged the group.  Charles Jennings then brought the event to a close with plenty of takeaways for the group and areas for further action, networking and discussion to develop.

Learning Futures 2011, Summary

May 2011

iVentiv’s first USA session, Learning Futures has now taken place in New York City.  With a participant list including GE, Intel, Avon, Hertz, Yahoo and CIGNA discussions were always going to be very strategic and at the cutting edge of L&D best practices.  Charles Jennings, Chair of the iVentiv Advisory Board and all round learning guru was on hand to chair this two day session.

iVentiv in the USACharles set the scene, with insight from his extensive experience which includes, most recently as Global CLO at Thomson Reuters.  We then had an exceptional opening keynote address from Evgeny Káganer, Professor of Information Systems at IESE Business School.  Evgeny took a look at what crowdsourcing means for business… and its employees.

The Professor of National Security Affairs at the US Naval War College then led a session on Learning Futures – from the developing world perspective.  Following this, Intel’s Chief of Staff walked us through the significant role executive development initiatives at Intel have been playing in the development of corporate strategy.

We then delved into an iVentiv Collaborative Café with Hitachi, DowJones, Intel and Charles Jennings all leading differing discussions.  The session facilitators presented back on their discussions at the start of day two, ‘pecha kucha’ style.  Further sessions included the CEO’s of two leading technology companies walking us through the power of tablet and mobile learning with first Ara Ohanian of CERTPOINT Systems followed by Piers Lea of LINE Communications.

On day two the CLO of New York Life Insurance Company talked us through the role the CLO plays in shaping corporate culture.  This was followed by GE’s take on Global Leadership Development, Cigna’s CLOs view of social and collaborative learning and finally Hertz Corporations take on generations and learning technologies.

With such rich content debated by a very senior group of CLO/VPs with an average company size of 100,000 employees the quality of knowledge exchanged was exceptional.  We eagerly anticipate our next USA session in San Francisco in December and the return to NYC next year.

Learning Technologies 2011 Summary

March 2011

Our best yet - with an overall event score of 97%  iVentiv's 2nd Learning Technologies, Executive Knowledge Exchange took place in the brand new Hyatt Regency located in the new media harbour, Dusseldorf, 21st-22nd March, 2011.

Russell Butler, iVentiv founder & CEO, opened proceedings with an overview of his own experiences in an evolving world of learning & development.  The vast array of bewildering resources which are shifting the way employees are accessing knowledge was alluded to.  Nick van Dam was then introduced who, as CLO in Global Talent at Deloitte was perfectly placed to chair the two days of interactive and open discussions.

Nick quickly set about engaging the group in the collaborative, team-based discussions commonly associated with iVentiv's executive exchanges.  Nick then posed a few questions to see why people had joined the event and what were they looking to take away.  The next questions identified what key initiatives the participants were currently driving within their organisations.

Nick was followed by an insight into the good, bad and ugly of serious games and simulations with PricewaterhouseCoopers.  The Global Learning Strategy Director at GlaxoSmithKline then took us through an interactive team based session looking at ‘Global Learning Organisations - From Anarchy to a Centralised Model’.  We discovered that the vast majority of L&D initiatives are deemed to lay at the corporate centre, but there was some debate as to whether this was the best setup.

Further sessions were facilitated by Cranfield University, LINE Communications, HP, CERTPOINT Systems and an interesting look at the power of video with former television anchor Bernd Kliebhan.  We also had time for some excellent Pecha Kucha style insights from Nike, HP, and Nick’s excellent foundation e-Learning for Kids.

With a new seating layout and a fantastic participant group our overall event score was tallied up at 97% - our best yet and almost impossible to better, but we will try!

Learning & Talent 2011 Summary

February 2011

10/02/11: iVentiv's Learning & Talent Executive Knowledge Exchange took place in Amsterdam 8th-9th February 2011.  This session looked at both Learning & Talent and sought to harmonise some of the tensions (and sometimes lack of communication) which can become apparent between these two areas of organisational HR.

The event opened with an excellent keynote session from Sebastien Brion, Professor at IESE Business School.  Sebastien introduced the event with a look at the Nature vs Nurture debate which has remained ever-present in the domain of L&T.    The traditional debates were enhanced with a look at the 'Marshmellow Experiment' (and the ability to delay gratification).  The summary was that there is no 'vs' debate here, both Nature and Nurture have a significant role to play which equates to a close relationship between Learning (nurture) and Talent (nature).

Other sessions included an insight to the future of learning at Ericsson from the organisations CLO whilst the Head of Canon's European Academy provided an insight to Canon's Learning Transformation story.  Day one also included our collaborative cafe session which enabled the participants to vote on the key topics for discussion on the day.  Royal Deutch Shell suggested a look at the future of learning and lead this session whilst other topics examined the future of L&T education at the university level, prior to individuals taking up such roles in organisations.

Day two continued the discussion focussed approach from day one and included an invigorating session from Nokia's Diversity & Inclusion Director on the innovative gender bilingualism approach which the organisation has adopted.  The Deputy Head of Allianz Management Institute provided the final session of the day and brought us an excellent case-study of a harmonised Learning & Talent function working closely together.

The closing thoughts from the session were brought together by our excellent chair Jacqueline Davies (Barclays) and we now look to the upcoming events in Dusseldorf (March) and New York City (May) with renewed focus and clarity on the relationship between Learning & Talent.

ED 2010 Summary

November 2010

15/11/10: iVentiv's 2nd Executive Development Summit took place this week at the Hyatt Regency in Cologne, Germany.  Whilst last year's session in Mainz had a focus on CSR, authentic leadership and maintaining executive development programs during a downturn this year's exchange had a distinctly more forward looking perspective.

Contributions from Learning Directors at SAP, Sara Lee, Alcatel-Lucent and HP amongst others outlined extremely successful, forward looking development initiatives.  The Head of Organisational Development at Standered Chartered said EDS2010 involved "Very stimulating and thought provoking sessions with a group of like minded professionals. Great event - well done to Russell and team!". Whilst Schneider Electric's VP L&D stated "I enjoyed the interaction and valued the continued learning. A well-organised and informative session."

With an excellent combination of collaborative sessions, discussion groups and a fantastic keynote session from IESE's Max Torres, this year’s exchange received an overall event rating of 89% and we are already looking forward to building on this success in 2011.
